From a broken frame to an information panel with Linux

In the world of technology, hardware recycling has ceased to be a simple ecological trend and has become a practice full of technical and business opportunities. A fascinating example is the transformation of a Nixplay digital frame that, after becoming unusable due to a firmware failure, turned into a smart screen with Linux capable of displaying a clock, calendar, weather, photos, and even Bible verses. The final solution consisted of a lightweight control panel, implemented with a single HTML page, vanilla JavaScript, and Firefox in kiosk mode, consuming only 200-300 MB of RAM. The free Open-Meteo API was used for weather data, and the secret iCal address from Google Calendar was integrated for the calendar, avoiding OAuth. Photos are served from a NAS via network shares.
