The mobile business and new operating systems

The mobile business will welcome in the coming days a handful of new operating systems that will do battle with the duopoly formed by Apple (iOS) and Google (Android), as well as compete with Windows Phone, BlackBerry, Symbian and Firefox, among others. These are China Operating System (COS), Ubuntu and Tizen. This trio of platforms will present their credentials next February in Barcelona on the occasion of the Mobile World Congress (MWC), the largest sector trade fair in the telecommunications industry. The effort of all of them will consist in winning the sympathies and support of developers, manufacturers and mobile device operators. Broadly speaking, the strategy consists of causing a break in the current hegemony with new alternatives that enrich and diversify the landscape. Some analysts already interpret the emergence of new operating systems as a battle between the United States (Android, Apple and Windows) against the rest of the world. Most relevant The most relevant movement is led by the Institute of Software of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (a body dependent on the Chinese Government) that has created the COS operating system to take the lead in its gigantic local market. The system will not only become the brain of the next generations of Chinese smartphones and tablets, but will also govern the operation of wearable devices (smart wearable clothing and accessories) and connected televisions, among other gadgets. COS is a platform built on Linux, following the example of Android, whose main advantage consists in taking advantage of the universality of the HTML5 web language, being compatible with this language, as well as with Java. The Ubuntu Kylin operating system, also free software, plans to formalize its birth next April. The platform promoted by the company Canonical, -highly appreciated in the professional computing field- will be a patent-free platform, which will offer significant savings to manufacturers who incorporate it into their devices. Various sources speculated months ago about the possibility that HTC would be the first major player to venture with Ubuntu. For its part, Samsung has been working for years on the development of its own operating system, named Tizen, with which it aims to reduce the dangerous dependence it currently maintains on Android. Next June 23 it could unveil its big bet in this field at the MWC. Finally, Firefox plans to make 2014 its year of takeoff thanks to the joint momentum of large telecommunications operators, including Telefónica.
