In this section, we present the process of generating XPath queries and the challenges faced. We encountered two main problems: references to non-existent elements and empty results. Randomly generated queries may be syntactically correct, but if they reference non-existent nodes or attributes, they can generate empty sequences. Because of this, we avoid generating queries that only contain non-existent references, as they do not allow testing the logic of processors.
To avoid obtaining empty results, we designed an approach that ensures the referenced nodes exist in the XML document. Our methodology allows the generated XPath expressions to correspond to valid nodes and attributes, thus more effectively evaluating the behavior of the system under test.
