In dark moments, during a mental health crisis, many people in the United States seek help through a federal government program.
Since 2005, counselors have been answering calls through the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, providing support to people in severe emotional distress. Last year, the program was relaunched as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, allowing users to connect with the service via an easy-to-remember three-digit number.
This service is essential. In 2021, approximately 50,000 people died by suicide in the United States, which equates to one death every 11 minutes. More than 12 million people seriously considered this possibility, according to statistics from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
While it is difficult to measure the exact impact of crisis lines due to ethical considerations in controlled studies, available evidence suggests that many people feel better able to cope with their situation after receiving help from this program.
The launch of the 988 line has been successful in making help more accessible than ever. In the first six months, the service managed more than two million calls, texts, and chats at local and regional crisis centers, significantly increasing its reach compared to the previous year.
However, it is not without controversy. Some research has revealed that certain crisis center websites affiliated with the program use tracking tools that send data to third-party platforms without users' knowledge. Additionally, the debate over call geolocation has raised concerns about privacy and the possibility of forced interventions.
Currently, when a person calls 988, their call is routed to a crisis center based on their phone's area code, which may mean the counselor receiving the call is in a different state than the user. Implementing geolocation would help solve this problem, ensuring the person receives support from the nearest center.
Some privacy advocates, however, are concerned that automatic call location could increase the number of non-consensual interventions, which could erode user trust in the service. There are reports of people being hospitalized against their will after seeking help, and some studies suggest this could increase the long-term risk of suicide.
The future of geolocation in the 988 service remains under debate. While some experts consider it a necessary tool in emergency situations, others warn of the need to establish safeguards that protect user autonomy.
