In this analysis, the most mentioned named entities in online far-left communities are examined, with a particular focus on so-called tankies. Using the en_core_web_lg model from the SpaCy library, named entities were extracted from posts on digital platforms to better understand the differences in the focus of these communities.
The results show that the entities most mentioned by tankies are related to China (China, Chinese, Mao), the United States (U.S., American, America, Americans, CIA, USA), the USSR (Stalin, USSR, Lenin), Russia, Ukraine, and Nazis. It is observed that tankies mention China more frequently than other far-left communities and also mention Stalin almost twice as often as Lenin. This inclination towards China and Stalinism is a distinctive characteristic of this community, which aligns with previous descriptions.
Additionally, Ukraine is detected as one of the most popular named entities among tankies, unlike other far-left communities, suggesting a greater interest or discussion about Russia-Ukraine relations, specifically the 2022 Russian invasion.
The similarity analysis using Rank Biased Overlap reveals that the community most similar to tankies in terms of named entity mentions is r/communism, followed by r/socialism, r/Anarchism, r/alltheleft, r/Marxism, r/DemocraticSocialism, and r/IWW, respectively.
