In this analysis, we explore the phenomenon of tankies within online far-left communities, examining their ideological alignment and differences in language use. To do so, we employ advanced natural language processing techniques that allow us to identify conceptual differences between tankies and other radical left communities.
One of the key findings is the acceptance of narratives promoted by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). It was observed that tankies use terminology preferred by the Chinese government and downplay reports of human rights abuses in the Xinjiang region. This suggests an ideological alignment with the official stances of the CCP.
Likewise, a tendency toward defending Stalinism was identified. Through an analysis of the language used, it became evident that tankies show a higher level of support for Stalin compared to other sectors of the left, reflected in their rejection of de-Stalinization processes and figures such as Nikita Khrushchev and Mikhail Gorbachev.
Another notable aspect is the stance of tankies regarding Russia and its narrative on Ukraine. It was found that these groups accept the terminology used by the Russian government in relation to occupied Ukrainian territories, evidencing an affinity with propaganda promoted by the Kremlin.
Furthermore, the analysis showed a marked anti-Zionist bias within the tankie community. It was observed that they simplify the complexity of Jewish identity and the establishment of the State of Israel, resulting in rhetoric that follows previous historical patterns of anti-Zionist campaigns.
Also identified was a greater use of pejorative terms to describe other ideologies within the left, such as 'anarkiddies' for anarchists and 'succdems' for social democrats. This use of language reinforces their perception of conflict with other sectors of the left.
In terms of media preferences, it was found that tankies consume and promote Russian and Chinese state media to a greater extent compared to Western media. This reinforces their inclination toward narratives driven by authoritarian governments.
Finally, regarding U.S. politics, tankies are especially critical of Joe Biden, with rhetoric similar to that used by more moderate left-wing communities, but with a generally more negative stance toward electoral democracy.
These findings allow for a better understanding of the differences between tankies and other far-left communities. Through linguistic analysis and data processing techniques, we were able to identify patterns of ideological alignment that offer a detailed overview of their stances and narratives in digital spaces.
